Ukraїner was founded in 2016 as a non-profit dedicated to exploring Ukrainian culture, identity, civil society, and their role in the development of democracy. Since then, we have grown from a deep-dive project focused on Ukraine into a full-scale media platform, offering 10+ language versions and running our own publishing house.
Despite the full-scale Russian invasion, we remain committed to our mission, telling the stories of how Ukrainians resist and overcome the hardships caused by occupying forces. We also delve into Ukrainian history, culture, and people who shape the country every day.
Recently, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) halted funding projects in Ukraine after President Donald Trump suspended all U.S. foreign aid programmes for 90 days to conduct audits. This decision abruptly cut off critical funding for Ukrainian initiatives, leaving many independent media outlets struggling to stay afloat. Ukraїner is among these facing such challenges. The loss of funding has significantly impacted the ability to counter Russian propaganda and amplify Ukraine’s voice on the global stage.

In just 8 years, Ukraїner has done more than sharing the beauty and uniqueness of Ukraine – we have also influenced both internal and international agenda. Throughout the full-scale invasion, we have supported Ukraine’s efforts in the information war, delivering quality content in multiple languages and formats.

Our media project and book “Who we are”, focused on national minorities and indigenous peoples of Ukraine, remains the most thorough study on the subject. In 2021, the law on indigenous peoples of Ukraine was passed, and our stories became an incentive in driving positive change raising awareness in Ukraine and far beyond its borders.
Our series of explainers about the Holodomor is still used to explain the issue and help parliaments of different countries to recognize this crime as a genocide.
Before the full-scale Russian invasion, we travelled to nearly every corner of Ukraine, creating a comprehensive map of stories, filming a feature-length documentary, capturing tens of thousands of photos, and publishing several books. These expeditions gave us the opportunity to explore Ukraine from within and share its essence with the world.
After the full-scale invasion, our expeditions through peaceful Ukraine transformed into journeys to the newly liberated territories under the title “De-occupation”. We are among the first to enter the de-occupied territories, documenting the resistance of the local population and the devastating consequences of the Russian invaders’ actions through the stories of ordinary citizens.
Our videos about the Ukrainian origin of the famous Christmas song “Carol of the Bells”, created in collaboration with the Ukrainian Institute, reached millions, while the research behind this project uncovered previously unpublished archives and facts.
Our first book in the Ukrainian Insider series was published in German by Bruckmann Verlag. The second part was released in the UK by Batsford Publisher and topped the Amazon ranking for books about Ukraine even before it was printed. In collaboration with National Geographic, we also released the book in Japan and are now actively expanding into other countries.
Thanks to our materials in multiple languages, both Ukrainians and foreigners across the world can raise funds to support Ukraine and educate others about its history and culture. Our photos, videos, and books have been showcased at events worldwide – from the US to Indonesia and the Philippines. During 2024, Ukraїner, as a publishing house, released three books and began working on six more.
Today, Ukraїner operates thanks to a dedicated team of about 40 people who daily handle coordination and management, guiding our efforts. This core team enables us to coordinate volunteer communities and secure project funding from companies and international foundations.

You may send any sum via a single transaction or subscribe to monthly support. Even if your donation equals a theatre ticket price, a hundred such tickets allow us to hire somebody important to our team. A subscription enables providing a stable development of Ukraїner.
You can support Ukraїner by buying goods in our souvenir store. Selling souvenir products, we can use only 30 % of their cost for the project development, but you can both wear something with our branding and help financially at the same time. In addition, we increase the number of published books every year, so you speed up the appearance of new ones by buying our books.
