The book is based on the first round of the expedition across Ukraine, from summer 2016 to winter 2018. This publication is divided into chapters according to the historical and ethnographic regions of the early 20th century: Bessarabia, Bukovyna, Volyn, Halychyna, Donechchyna, Zakarpattia, the Carpathians, Naddniprianshchyna, Podillia, Podniprovia and Zaporizhzhia, Polissia, Poltavshchyna, Pryazovia, Prychornomoria, Sivershchyna, Slobozhanshchyna, and Tavria.

The Ukraїner team has collected the most exciting moments of our travelling to these regions: stories of people and places that both inspire and surprise. These are stories about buffaloes of Zakarpattia, the Askania-Nova reserve, the narrow-gauge railway, Chornobyl, Mariupol, as well as folk instruments and crafts from different regions. Real people’s stories about the places they care about are complemented by full-colour photos and QR codes, scanning which allows you to watch videos from the expedition.

The head of Askania-Nova nature reserve, Viktor Havrylenko, knows every piece of this land. Any car other than his own is not allowed to enter the reserve because the animals recognise it.

— I keep telling my colleagues I am the wildest among them. No one has lived so many years in the forest off the beaten track. Today, there are more than 500 species of higher plants and 3,000 species of animals in Askania-Nova. Here, you can study the behaviour of zebras, bison and antelopes in conditions close to the wild.

Immediately after its publication, the book became a best-seller at the IX International Book Arsenal Festival in Kyiv and was nominated for the BookForum Best Book Award-2019 Grand Prix, in adition to receiving two awards.

The book is available in Ukrainian and English.
